Improve your personal effectiveness while working less

Working on several projects is often necessary, but difficult to successfully execute. Getting more done within the same time constraints, can be done with the correct actions. In this article, I will talk about ways to improve your personal effectiveness I have used with favorable outcomes.

What is personal effectiveness?

Let’s get started. What is personal effectiveness? In the simplest terms, personal effectiveness is making use of all the resources available at your disposal. This would include all your skills, talents, time, and energy to enable you to master your life, both personal and professional, and to achieve your goals at home and work.

Why is personal effectiveness important?

How to improve your personal effectiveness is important to everyone. Regardless of your career path, whether you are still in school, or perhaps a stay at home parent, possessing effective living skills can lead to more control over daily life, more focus in the outcomes, and an overall sense of achievement. People who live effectively feel more energized and are able to manage themselves efficiently. They are better prepared to deal with life’s unexpected moments and are much more likely to manage stress and have confidence in their own abilities and strengths.

What are the characteristics of personal effectiveness?

To become successful and to improve your personal effectiveness, you need to use the resources you have at your disposal, effectively to achieve your defined goals in the shortest time possible and with the least amount of waste. To better understand what are the characteristics and to improve your personal effectiveness and how it can be achieved. Let’s break down the characteristics of highly effective people and we’ll use as our Top 10 actionable steps to reach your goals!

  1. Productivity. Plan your work, work your plan. If you don’t measure it, you can’t improve it. Planning is required for every minute of time you have so as to avoid wasting time. You’ll find that planning reduces normal anxiety of not being prepared, allows you to achieve more than you thought was possible, and watch your productivity soar.
  2. Determination. With a doubt, personally effective people are extremely determined. This behavioral trait allows them to focus on achieving their specific goals without being distracted by random desires or other unimportant things. This is achieved by developing self-discipline.
  3. Persistence. Many people fail because they lack this trait. After trying once and failing, they simply give up. Highly effective people keep moving forward despite any challenges they encounter. If you can develop the ability to overcome obstacles and maintain focus, then any goal is possible.
  4. Creativity. I really love this one. To be effective you need to be different, think differently, and let original thoughts flow through your mind. This trait is developed by putting yourself in an environment that forces you to think creatively, where new solutions are required. Surrounding yourself with creative people is also helpful.
  5. Optimism. Effective people have a belief that the work they are undertaking is important and necessary. It is this belief in the importance of the task at hand, that allows effective people the ability to stay on task until the work is completed.
  6. Self-confidence. To improve your personal effectiveness comes from trusting yourself, becoming self-aware, knowing your actions, and as well as their consequences. Self-confidence is developed in your appearance, your interpersonal effectiveness skills, the manner in your dress, and your overall physical condition. To develop self-confidence you will need to improve an understanding of yourself, your capabilities, develop and maintain a positive attitude, and trust that by performing these correct actions and reach the goals you’ve set, that you will eventually reach success.
  7. Problem-solving. There’s no escaping it, problems will come your way. The expression, “Calm seas never made a good sailor”, is particularly fitting for this effective characteristic. To improve your personal effectiveness, having the ability to solve problems as they present themselves increases the likelihood of reaching your goals.
  8. Stress Management. Stress can quickly derail even the most effective person. Developing the skills on how to relieve stress is essential for personal effectiveness. Identify your stress triggers and look for ways to reduce them. Effective stress management beings with identifying your sources of stress and developing strategies to manage them.
  9. Time management. Many understand the importance of time management at an early age. Half the challenge of school, at any age, is time management. Developing the ability to plan and exert control over how one’s time is spent leads to effectively accomplish goals. The lack of proper time management delays the achievement of goals and negatively impacts personal effectiveness.
  10. Self-motivation. I’ve saved the one for last because I feel most strongly about it. Highly effective people are able to find motivation from within. They are not dependent on others to push them. Can you motivate yourself? If so, executing goals will be much easier. Motivation is what gives you the determination to keep going. Learn what motivates you and use it to exceed all your expectations of what you thought was possible!

What is an example?

Improving your personal effectiveness will be something entirely different from others based on your career, personal life, and goals. Personal effectiveness refers to using all of your skills, talent, and energy to reach a specific goal or set of goals in your life. One example may be working on your personal strengths. When thinking about how to improve your personal effectiveness, some may consider it wise to spend time working on your weakest skills, it should not be the primary focus of your time. Instead, prioritize your time honing your already strong skills and attributes, and develop them into superior assets.

Know your talents

By working on personal effectiveness, you develop a better understanding of your true talents. You learn to use these most efficiently. In addition, the focus to improve your personal effectiveness will allow you to understand which skills are lacking and need to be developed to achieve your goals.

What is personal effectiveness training?

Training courses on how to improve your personal effectiveness are designed to develop the key skills and techniques needed to build personal impact, influence, and effectiveness in interacting with others.

How do you manage your time?

Learning to manage your time starts with finding a good time management system and work it. There are plenty out there. I wouldn’t view them as one being better than others, rather, some time management courses and techniques will be better suited to you than others. The key is settling on one and sticking with it. Time management systems force you to think differently about how you view and value time. You will be amazed at what can be accomplished once you develop these techniques!

How do you measure personal effectiveness?

Measuring personal effectiveness will be different for everyone based on what is being evaluated. In the workplace, you may have key metrics by which your performance is gauged against, or your boss may recognize you’re more prepared for meetings, or even your peers may notice a heightened interest in new projects. At home, you may make changes to your daily routine to make better use of the time available to finish all the tasks you’ve always wanted to be completed.

As you can see, the measurement of personal effectiveness can come in all shapes and sizes. The key is making the most of your skills, time, and resources to be more effective and efficient.

Let’s get started.

I love a checklist and use one with everything I do.

In the workplace, a checklist guides me through my daily routine and dramatically increases my productivity. It ensures everything is accounted for, down to the smallest detail.

I typically pre-populate my checklist with tasks I need to do each day and leave several blank spaces for additional entries as they arise.

A checklist gives me a sense of comfort and helps me manage my stress levels, by knowing I have completed each task I have deemed to be important has been addressed.

I print a stack of worksheets and keep them on a clipboard on my desk. At the end of each day, any tasks not completed are transferred to tomorrow’s checklist.

At home, a checklist is just as important to me. During the week, there are always tasks or to-do items around the house that pop up. They need to be addressed but I just need the time. However, when the weekend finally rolls around, I often became overwhelmed or got “analysis paralysis”. Does this ever happen to you?

I can’t make plans on Saturday morning for work I want to complete on the same day. By that time, my mind is just too hectic.

I can, however, fill out my checklist on Friday evening, or the day prior to my day off, to include everything I wish to accomplish the following day. And it works every time!

I’ve just made my “go-to” worksheet available and you will definitely want to download this checklist! It’s very simple, but extremely useful.
