Wintry Wednesday was a lot like the evening run yesterday, just a bit cooler.
December 2, 2020.
The weather came in at a chilly 46F degree workout with 13 mph winds.
It was a pretty day to run, just cold. I’m sure I will look back a couple months from today and laugh that I was complaining about 40F degree temps.
My pre-run meal – Empty stomach run. I tend to run well with an empty stomach, but I’m just grouchy and agitated while I’m working out.
Running Gear Checklist
It is clear and sunny this afternoon, the temperature outside was (46F), with steady winds (13 mph).
My pre-run checklist:
- Nutrition – Nothing to eat before my run. I started a pot roast before heading out, and plan to eat a salad once I’m done.
- Warm-up stretches include some squats, high kicks (front and back), lunges, and pulling knees to the chest
- Power check for my phone and AirPods
- Wore my long sleeve tech shirt, and a retro Nike Fit jacket
- A Patagonia headband ear warmer
- Also, broke out my INSPORT running mittens. They must be 15 years old. Love ’em!

- BUT, forgot to put on my reflective vest. I didn’t realize it until I was a half-mile into my run. Ugh
- Grabbed my handheld phone carrier

On the Run – Before and After
The outside temp was chilly today. I started out with a headwind, but on return run home I had the wind at my back and actually got quite warm.
I noticed my right hip was sore last night. Today I realized it was related how I run on the road. The road I run on has a slight crown to it. At the midway point, I cross over and run on the other side of the road so I am always facing traffic.
The issue is my right foot is always on the higher part of the road, going out and coming back. Either I find a flatter road to run on or I will have to run half of my route going with traffic. I’m not a big fan of injuries or soreness.
I enjoyed the headband tonight. It kept my forehead warm, without allowing the top of my head to overheat.
The running mittens were a nice addition tonight as well. The mittens were very nice in the beginning, but my hands did get sweaty on the way back. Overall, it was the right decision to use them.
Nutrition
I was hungry before my run, but it was manageable. I picked up groceries before I came home to run, so I post-run snack and meal on my mind.
My post-run snack – A bowl of spring mix salad with black beans, a large can of tuna, sliced pickled beets, and dried onion strings, topped with Lite Raspberry dressing. Amazing!
My dinner – Pot roast in a oven bag, with onions, potatoes, and carrots. It is still cooking, but smells incredible.
I am trying to turn a new leaf on my nutrition. I know from my past running experiences that dropping a few pounds makes a big difference on how I feel during my workouts.
While Ben & Jerry’s is my kryptonite, I will start to supplement my cravings with plain yogurt with sugar-free vanilla syrup, and chopped walnuts. It is surprisingly good!
The streak rolls on
Today was a good day. Solid run, combined with a good post-run snack. Check, check.
Another one in the books.
